DRUG ABUSE AMONG SECONDARY STUDENTS

Drug is defined as medicine of substance used in making medicine. If it is used other than for medical purposes, it is known as drug abuse. Poppies are wild or garden flowers, which are used in the process of making drugs. Among the many types of drugs are cannabis, marijuana and cocaine.
Drug abuse among university and college students is getting more serious day by day. This has been global issue. Recently, newspaper reports show more and more students being involved in drug abuse. They are found guilty of taking drugs and being drug pushers.
One of the reasons why students taking drugs is because they have a high level of curiosity in them. They would like to know the taste of drug and the feeling that they will get from taking drugs. This can be prevented if students know the difference between what is good and what is bad and feel that they have to taste the feel of that drug because they have an instine to try a new thing . They must know that drugs are bad for health and they should never try tasting drugs, as once they have some, they will be hooked.
They are also take drugs due to pressure from study and parents wants them to perform well in their studies. Students have to learn how to handle such pressure in college and parents should not put too much pressure on them. Family problems also cause students to take drugs. Some unfortunate students have parents who fighting and some of them make their children as the place to let the anger out. These lead their child to take drugs to forget about their problems.
Other than that, influenced by their friends are also one of the reason why they are taking drugs. Parents should get to know their children's friends to make sure that they do not mix with bad company. They must learn to say 'no' to friends who offer them drugs and report them to the authorities party immediately. Those who offer drugs to others, known drug pushers, usually do not consume drugs.
Some students take drugs to get attention from their parents. This is because their parents are to busy working for their living. In this case, the quality of time spent with the children is more importants than the quantity of time spent. Parents should give their children love and attention. By doing so, they can earn their children's trust so that they will discuss their problems with their parents and they will not take a drugs.
Univesities or colleges can also play their role in preventing drug abuse among college and universities students. Anti-drug clubs should be set up and they should hold activities such as discussions on the effects of drugs on health and to others. Other than that, an anti-drug week should be held anually. It should organize activities such as debates and quizzes on drugs, so as to make students more aware of drug abuse. The counsellor should encourage students to talk about their problems with him/her. The counsellor should be a good listener and be able to advise the studentson how to handle the problems they are facing.
The government and non-governmental organizations should hold awareness campaigns at shopping malls and schools and also at all universities and colleges to educate the public, especially secondary students on drug abuse. Clubs and societies such as 'Rakan Muda' can also be formed. These clubs and societies can hold a lot of interesting activities, to keep students occupied. These activities might bring out the hidden talent in these students such as singing, acting creative writing and drawing such as poster for 'Say No to Drugs'. Everyone should join forces in curbing drug abuse among students. Preventive measures should also be taken as prevention is better than cure. I hope that our government will take more serious and effective action to overcome drug abuse among students, as they are the future leaders of the country.
